Taylor Swift‘s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a sassy kiss-off to an ex-paramour, but her Stand Up To Cancer track “Ronan” is a goodbye of an entirely different variety. Co-written with Maya Thompson, the song is a tribute to Thompson’s four-year-old son Ronan, who succumbed to cancer last year. If that idea alone isn’t enough to get you bawling, the gorgeous ballad itself is likely to, featuring ruminations such as Ronan would want to be for Halloween this year if he were still alive and lyrics like “You were my best four year.”
The subject matter is so devastating, Swift herself even has to audibly sigh at one point. And yet, despite the sadness, the ultimate takeaway is one of hope: “What if the miracle was even getting one moment with you?” Hear it below.
Taylor Swift – “Ronan”
Surely, both lyrically and musically, this has to be one of Swift’s best songs ever, no?
