Iggy Azalea’s “Bac 2 Tha Future (My Time)”: Watch The Busy Video

iggy azalea bac 2 tha future

Iggy's 2-Minute Drill

The stylish Iggy Azalea is back with a music video for her new song “Bac 2 Tha Future (My Time)” off her forthcoming TRAPGOLD mixtape (out October 11). Sadly, there’s no Delorean in the clip, but there’s a lot going on in the frenetic banger and its fittingly quick-cut video, combining for two minutes of relentless sensory assault (we mean that in a good way).

The video was directed by Bell Soto and inspired by Salvador Dali. The track was produced by frequent Iggy collaborator 1stDown of FKi. And while we can’t speak to 1stDown’s inspiration, we’re guessing Diplo falls in somewhere. Check it out up top.

Tailgating Threads

In Columbus, the changing of the leaves and the increasingly brisk temperatures serve as a reminder that everything else in life will soon become inconsequential; once fall hits, the Buckeyes always take precedence. From now until the end of November, Saturday is strictly devoted to college football and OSU apparel. Serving as the United States’ unofficial test market, Columbus is extremely fortunate to have a variety of companies headquartered here, including some focused on keeping production local. On game day there are two Columbus-based collegiate apparel houses that dominate the market: Homage and TBidness. Devoted to replicating the look and (more importantly) the feel of vintage tees, these homegrown labels allow wearers to experience that specific gratification you can only get while slipping your arms through a perfectly worn (and oddly luxurious) vintage tee or sweatshirt. Fortunately for the rest of the country, Homage and Tbidness don’t discriminate and sell a wide range of collegiate apparel. If by chance your team isn’t featured on one of their sites, check out The Original Retro Brand or the The Mitten State (a line devoted to Michigan and its teams) for even more American-made apparel. Happy tailgating!

Fiona Apple Apologizes For The “Bulls***,” Clarifies “Lockbox” Rant

Fiona Apple Governors Ball 2012

Fiona Apple on Monday (September 24) in New Orleans apologized to her fans for all the drama surrounding her recent marijuana arrest, according to Billboard. During the performance, she told the crowd “I’m really, really sorry that all the work that we did is being overshadowed by all this bullshit.”

By “all this bullshit,” we’re assuming she means: her September 19 arrest in Sierra Blanca, TX for drug possession (which cost her a night in jail and $10,000 bond, her ensuing rant that the cops treated her illegally and that she would make them “fucking famous” and then the sheriff’s office response that she should “just shut up and sing.”

It’s worth noting Apple didn’t explicitly apologize for the drug possession itself. But she did address her perplexing lockbox comments. If you’ll remember, while ranting against the officers who jailed her, she said at a recent show, “I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said…I then ripped the paper up, but not before I encoded it and - I got two lock boxes. We'll call them 'holding cell one' and 'holding cell two.' In 'holding cell one' is the encoded version of the shit that you did that I know was inappropriate and probably illegal. In 'holding cell two' is the decoder. I'm the only one who holds the key.”

On Monday, she clarified (we guess?) those comments: “There are no fucking lock boxes. I didn’t make up a code…It was my way of drawing a parallel between the self. I am not that fucked up.” OK! So, now that that’s all behind her…to paraphrase one Rusty Fleming, we can all just shut up and let her sing again.

Katy Perry Named ‘Billboard’ Woman Of The Year: Morning Mix

katy perry

Did You Hear?

:: Katy Perry has won Billboard‘s Woman of the Year Award. While you could argue her 2011 was more impressive, this year she accomplished quite a lot, including a world tour, releasing “Wide Awake,” starring in a 3-D movie and a Sims video game, oh and dropping Russell Brand. [Billboard]

:: More awards! Feist beat out the likes of Drake and Japandroids to win Canada’s $30,000 Polaris Music Prize for her 2011 album Metals. The award “is given to the year’s best Canadian album with no consideration to genre, professional affiliation or sales requirement.” [Rolling Stone]

:: Rihanna wished Chris Brown luck ahead of his September 24 court hearing, but maybe she was jinxing him, because Breezy tested positive for marijuana. As a result, he’ll be back in court for a probation violation hearing on November 1. [CNN]

:: Usher has postponed European tour dates due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming stint on The Voice. The dates have been pushed back and will now coincide with a North American tour in fall 2013. [That Grape Juice]

Ester Dean Plans Missy Elliott Collaboration & Debut Album

pitch perfect premiere 03 250912

Ester Dean recently clocked a mention on our list of the best songs that radio forgot this summer with her buzz track “Bam Bam,” but the bajillion-times-platinum songwriter (who has penned smashes for Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and more) is prepping a big U.S. launch with another major talent - rapstress Missy Elliott.

Dean told ESSENCE that though she’ll be launching a different single overseas, her U.S. single, titled “How You Love It,” features Elliott and is set for a release. She also hinted at the upcoming title for her debut. Head after the jump for more details about what to expect from Dean.

When asked about her plans for the album, Dean explained: “I don’t know about [an album title]. It’s all about what song you pick. But I would like it to be called Stories Never Told. I’ve said a lot of things and a lot of people have heard the words I’ve said, but it’s a story never told. They don’t understand what I meant by those words because they were always given out through a different source.” Okay. We get it. We think.

And as for her songwriting process, Dean said that she feels no pressure to deliver a killer album, because her passion for the work is inherent: “I do this because I love it,” she said. “I never feel pressure to do anything. I don’t feel pressure to write songs for them. I do this because I love it. If that moment of pressure makes me feel like I don’t love it - I’ll walk away.”

We just hope she can get the album out before she has to walk away.

Wiz Khalifa & The Weeknd Will “Remember You”: Listen

wiz khalifa remember you

Wiz Khalifa is the fun-loving, laid back stoner MC. The Weeknd‘s Abel Tesfaye is the mysterious, druggy crooner. Aesthetically, it’s a good match, but musically, the two fall on opposite ends of the spectrum. Wiz’s music is bouncy and light, the party. Abel’s R&B is pensive and angular, the comedown.

So we were curious to see how the two would fit together on “Remember You,” from Wiz’s delayed O.N.I.F.C. (now slated for a December 4 release). Would the musical styles clash, or would one side win out? Or would their dual penchant for drugs somehow overcome all differences? Listen to the full track after the jump to find out.

As you can see, er, hear pretty much immediately, The Weeknd’s PBR&B won out over Wiz’s hesher-hop. Distant thuds, echoing vocals, looping riffs - these are Tesfaye’s trademarks. And the whole affair sounds like it was recorded on the far end of a tunnel, which is pretty much his thing, too.

But Wiz wears it well (filed under: things not said about his O.N.I.F.C. cover). The spare arrangement draws attention to his sometimes choppy flow, but overall it’s a drippy, Drake-ian listen full of The Weeknd’s sinister sexual boasts and Wiz’s party antics (“all of the shit that I did I probably won’t remember tomorrow”).

One thing, though: what’s with the weird groan at 2:46?

Rihanna Rolls An Expensive Joint On “Diamonds” Single Artwork

Rihanna Diamonds Single Artwork

Rihanna has never been subtle about her affection for cannabis culture - she’s been photographed wearing marijuana-themed sweaters, hats and assorted swag, not to mention smoking suspicious-looking cigarettes in Instagram photos - but she’s taking it to the next level in the cover artwork for her new single “Diamonds,” released today via her official fansite. The photo shows Rihanna’s hands (identifiable because of her tribal tattoo) pinching a rolling paper full of diamonds: a more valuable substance than what papers frequently contain, and arguably more intoxicating.

The single artwork is an audacious move from the Bajan superstar, but at this point, Rihanna’s propensity for courting controversy shouldn’t come as a surprise. (This is, after all, the same artist who brought us the lyrical gem, “Suck my cockiness/Lick my persuasion.”) “Diamonds” is set to begin blazing up radio and iTunes on Wednesday, September 26 - and according to one listener who’s previewed the track, it’s a “classic.” Read on for details after the jump.

Hip-hop producer Pop Wansel, who has worked with Nicki Minaj and Kanye West, tweeted yesterday that he was impressed by the record, writing:

This fuckin Rihanna “Diamonds” record thooooo!?!?!?? Smhhhh @itsbennyblanco!!! Wait until you guys hear this shiiiiittttt!!! #classic

- Pop Wansel (@PopWansel) September 23, 2012

Tagging Benny Blanco in the tweet all but confirms what’s been rumored for awhile - that the track was at least partially helmed by the “Teenage Dream” hitmaker. The Prophet Blog reports that Sia was also involved, while a press release confirms that Ri’s frequent collaborator Stargate had a hand in the song’s production as well. Sounds like a smash to us.

Charli XCX Is “So Far Away”: Watch The Trippy Video

charli xcx so far away

DIY Disney Princess

British electro-pop singer Charli XCX has released the video for “So Far Away,” a toxic love song off her You’re The One EP. The song sees Charli semi-rapping through the verses, while the hook showcases her lovely, underused falsetto.

But the singer doesn’t appear much in Ryan Andrews’ psychedelic video, which features recycled footage of Charli mashed up with Disney princesses. Whereas “You’re The One” had more of a grinding, industrial feel and thus its video took place in a dingy warehouse, this clip’s DIY visual collage fits nicely with the song’s pasted-together elements of rap, pop and chillwave. Watch it up top.
