Did Steven Meisel Copy Scary Video Game The Path For This W Spread?

When Lana Del Rey told her distant boyfriend to “go play a video gaaaame,” it seems like the fashion world listened. First there was Prada’s virtual reality-esque fall ad campaign, then came Conde Nast’s trist with personal gaming, and now, it seems photographer Steven Meisel has gotten more than a little inspiration from a computer game called The Path.

Blog Is This Fun Yet? noticed some extreme similarities between Meisel’s “Spellbound” shoot in the September issue of W and The Path‘s character selection screen. We’ll admit–we aren’t gaming fanatics (unless you’re counting virtual pets–I still love my Tamagotchi), but it’s impossible to deny that Meisel, who also shot the Prada ads, was influenced by this game in particular, which is apparently based on Little Red Riding Hood. And it’s not too hard to see why: The characters in that game definitely have a goth-chic thing happening. That girl in the window? Totally rocking that Mary Poppins hat.

Are you into this trend of video games in fashion? Which of Steven Meisel’s creepy models would you choose to walk down The Path to Grandmother’s house? And most importantly, when is someone going to do an editorial inspired by Duck Hunt??
