Mary J. Blige’s ‘The London Sessions’ Documentary Screening: A Recap

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Last night (October 29), we at Idolator were invited to attend a private screening of Mary J. Blige‘s new documentary in New York City’s Soho House. The film (directed by Sam Wrench) captured all the moments it took to create the singer’s upcoming album - The London Sessions.

Recording began this summer, with the diva spending one month in London’s studios. Heavy hitters like Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Capitol Records’ CEO Steve Barnett, songwriter Jimmy Napes, Sam Smith, Emeli Sand , Naughty Boy and Sam Romans all make appearances in the film. The London Sessions is such a different sound for Blige, with its core being rooted in ’90s-influenced UK house. The film reveals the inspiration sparked when she collaborated with Disclosure in January for their hit, “F For You.” The British brothers stated, “I hope [the album] causes a stir. She could go in the studio with Timbaland, but she chose two boys from Surrey!”

Blige’s vocals have always known to be heartfelt and soulful, so it was a perfect moment when the documentary showed her having lunch with Amy Winehouse‘s father Mitch. The main highlight threaded throughout it is the genuine friendship between Blige and her collaborators, which is reflected in all of the songs that we’ve heard off the album thus far. The film shows the singer in a new light; she exudes confidence as a woman and an artist more than ever. This new album has a distinctively fresh sound that is new for Blige, but it still keeps the emotive soul that we love from her.

After the documentary screening, Blige herself sat down to answer some questions about the making of the record as well as her experience working with artists like Sam Smith and Disclosure. She revealed she went the UK house direction because she was able to do more. Calling the album her “breakout moment,” she stated “It’s the evolution of Mary J. Blige and shows that I could do more than just R&B and Hip-Hop.”

Tina Turner‘s famous “River Deep, Mountain High” era was an inspiration for the singer, as she was able to break free from the constraints that people expected from her. “I haven’t felt like this since the Breakthrough album, since My Life or even What’s The 411?

The London Sessions (out on December 2), is the singer’s forthcoming thirteenth studio LP - with songs like “Therapy,” “Right Now,” “Nobody But You” and “Whole Damn Year.” It features collaborations from artists like Sam Smith, Emeli Sand and Naughty Boy.

Did MTV Accidentally Confirm That Beyonce Is Performing At The MTV EMAs?

http://beyonce-contour.com/

It looks like MTV accidentally confirmed that Beyonce is performing at the EMAs! The broadcaster just uploaded a promo video to their YouTube account with the description: “Don’t miss Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Iggy Azalea, Eminem and more performing Sunday, November 9th.” It could just be a mistake but the other three artists mentioned have already been announced, so maybe they let the cat out of the bag?

If Queen Bey does take the stage, it will be the diva’s first televised performance since that mesmerizing medley at the MTV VMAs in September. And if she does appear, it’s a pretty safe bet that she’ll perform the “***Flawless” remix with Nicki Minaj - after all, the femcee is hosting the event. See the cute promo video and a screengrab of the description after the jump.

Here’s the video:

And a screengrab of the list of performers:

dillon-francis-make-it-bounce

Dillon Francis is a little over a month away from conquering clubs and soundtracking your next hundred or so parties with bone-rattling debut LP Money Sucks, Friends Rule (due October 27). The LA-based DJ/moombahton pioneer signaled his intent to make your shit jiggle with DJ Snake-assisted “Get Low” but takes it to the next level on “We Make It Bounce”.

A collaboration with Major Lazer (Diplo‘s day job when he’s not producing hits for other folks) and British reggae singer Stylo G, “We Make It Bounce” certainly lives up to its title with beats big enough to break your speakers. “AS I SAY AT EVERY SHOW I NEED TO SEE YOU BOUNCING TO THIS SHIT!!!” writes Dillon eloquently about his new jam. Listen after the jump.

Ariana Grande Covers ‘Marie Claire’, Talks Writing Overly Sexual Song “Higher” At Age 14

Ariana Grande Marie Claire magazine cover October 2014

Last year, Ariana Grande launched her pop-R&B sound with her Mac Miller pair-up “The Way,” which wound up becoming the first of what would become her string of several catchy Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The onetime Nickelodeon star was 20 at the time, but as she reveals in the October issue of Marie Claire, she was personally ready to cut an album of R&B tracks - ones, it seems, with a mature slant - years prior to that.

“I was 14 years old and ready to make an R&B album,” Grande says in her cover feature. “I was like, ‘Where is that Mary J. Blige collab? Where is that Natasha Bedingfield writing session? Where is my session with India.Arie? I’m ready. Let’s go.’ I wrote this song called ‘Higher,’ and the lyrics were too sexual, too mature. And my mom was like, ‘This is a great song, but damn, you’re too young for this.’”

And speaking of “The Way,” Grande had the following to say about launching herself as a woman singing pop songs versus the innocence of her TV characters:

“I was like, ‘Guys, there has to be a really distinct difference between me and my character.’ And we did that with ‘The Way.’ I dyed my hair back to brown. I made out with a rapper in the video. I made the point I wanted to make. And I was excited to do so after so many years of pretending to be somebody else in front of a lot of people.”

Beyonce And Jay Z Bring ‘On The Run’ To HBO

On the Run

Beyonce and Jay Z‘s first-ever joint tour is coming to HBO in September - meaning, the hysteria will be televised. HBO’s On the Run Tour: Beyonce and Jay Z special will tape Sept. 12 and 13 at the Stade de France in Paris, the only international leg of the tour, the network announced July 10.

With On the Run, the hip-hop royal couple has fully established its landmark relationship with HBO. Early last year, the network aired Beyonce: Life Is But A Dream, which marked the TV debut of Blue Ivy Carter. Later, it debuted Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film - Jay Z’s extended "Picasso Baby" video filmed inside Chelsea’s Pace Gallery, as further proof of his still-growing crossover appeal.

HBO’s ties with Beyonce and Jay Z are particularly interesting, because while the former is a notoriously private person, the latter can be cagey in interviews. Life Is But A Dream nad Picasso Baby were immaculately curated. Neither of them were particularly revealing, but that barely matters given the couple’s enormous influence. By now, fans would do anything to get a closer look.

Michael Jackson Becomes The First Solo Artist To Land Top 10 Hits In 5 Different Decades

Just when you thought Michael Jackson has run out of records to break, the King of Pop made history again today (May 21) when Justin Timberlake-assisted disco anthem “Love Never Felt So Good” climbed into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The much-missed music legend became the first artist to land top 10 hits in five different decades.

The Xscape hitmaker scored his first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Got To Be There” in 1971 and revisited the upper reaches of the chart regularly over the next 30 years. Michael reached the top 10 for the last time (while he was alive) with Invincible lead single “You Rock My World” in 2003. Given the advances in technology and MJ’s enduring popularity, it’s not unfathomable that he could extend his streak in decades to come. Watch “Love Never Felt So Good” after the jump.

Will Michael’s latest record ever be beaten? Have your say in the comments below.

Selena Gomez ‘Takes Back Her Power’ By Posting A Sexy Bikini Pic On Instagram

2014 hasn’t been particularly kind to Selena Gomez. The Stars Dance diva began the year by entering rehab for an unspecified health issue and then rekindled her on-again/off-again relationship with Justin Bieber before it all went south. (He not so classily posted romantic pictures with a Sel look-a-like on Instagram to drive the point home).

Well, the 21-year-old is ready to bounce back. She posted a sexy bikini pic on the social media site today (May 21) with the caption: “Taking my power back.. can’t wait to show you where I’ve been. I love y’all.” Oh and she also randomly added: “Ps, I still obsess over pickles.” I guess that’s good to know. Selena is rumored to be working on new music, which is said to be due in the not too distant future. See her busty Insta-update after the jump.

Lana Del Rey’s ‘Ultraviolence’ Promo Begins, Rumors Swirl About “West Coast” Release Date

The second coming of Lana Del Rey is almost upon us. Posters for the gloomy diva’s crazily-anticipated sophomore set Ultraviolence went up around Brooklyn, New York today (April 8), which would fit in with the LP’s alleged May 1 release date. More excitingly, usually reliable LDR fan accounts are tweeting that new single “West Coast” could hit iTunes as early as tonight.

While those rumors have not been confirmed by the 27-year-old’s record label, new music can’t be too far away. Lana is performing at Coachella this weekend (and next) before kicking off her 2014 North American tour in Texas on April 24. It makes sense that she would use these promo opportunities to introduce fans to Ultraviolence. Right?

Rumor has it @LanaDelRey's new single 'West Coast' from her upcoming album 'Ultraviolence' will be released tonight.

Ester Dean’s New Single “#GMD” Was Intended For ‘Bangerz’: Listen To A Snippet Of Miley’s Demo

Ester Dean is probably the best-kept secret in popular music. The hugely-talented (mostly) R&B diva scored a top 40 hit in 2009 with Chris Brown-assisted club banger “Drop It Low” and has featured on numerous singles since then but she is predominantly known as a songwriter. After all, this woman has crafted signature songs for Beyonce, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera.

And it looks like she was trying to add Miley Cyrus to that long list. When Ester announced that her new single is called “#GMD” - short for “Get My Dough” - on Twitter today (April 10) resourceful Smilers were quick to uncover a similarly titled Bangerz demo. A brief snippet then surfaced online and it’s a cracker. “It’s not a slut, I’m not a tramp, I’m not a hoe but Imma get my dough,” sings the serial twerker on the ratchet-pop jam which was supposed to feature Nicki Minaj. Preview the song and see Ester’s tweet after the jump.

Sevyn Streeter Unveils Club-Conquering “It Won’t Stop” Remix Package: Listen

Sevyn Streeter broke big last year with Chris Brown-assisted R&B anthem “It Won’t Stop”. The romantic slow jam ruled urban radio for months but also found love in the clubs courtesy of a bunch of killer dance remixes, which she has now compiled for your listening pleasure.

The mixes are uniformly good but, if you’re looking for a guilty pleasure, it’s hard to go past Cahill‘s bubbly overhaul. The British DJs turn the soulful groove into a fizzy Euro-pop delight that should be embarrassing but isn’t. Danny Verde delivers the goods for serious clubbers and Los Angeles-based Mozaix impress with their festival edit. Listen to all of them after the jump.

What’s your favorite remix? Let us know in the comments below.

Beyonce’s Next Single Is “Partition”? Listen To The Purported Radio Edit

Beyonce is currently enjoying her biggest hit in five years with Jay Z-assisted “Drunk In Love” but it looks like Mrs. Carter is already thinking about her the next single. Today (February 19) a radio edit of bedroom anthem “Partition” surfaced online, which suggests she’s about the make the airwaves a much sexier place in the imminent future.

The problem is that there’s no official confirmation. Bey doesn’t play the press release game anymore and her label probably doesn’t know what she’s up to anyway. The edit certainly sounds slick enough to be authentic but I’d be surprised if she hacks “Partition” down to a measly three minutes. I guess we won’t know for sure until it hits iTunes.

As for the selection of “Partition” as single number three? Well, its highly explicit nature - for non-Hive this is the song in which Beyonce memorably laments “he Monica Lewinsky‘d all on my gown” - makes it an uneasy fit for pop radio but it’s already climbing the Billboard Hot 100 due to streaming and has strong download sales. Listen to the purported radio edit after jump.

Is this the best choice for Beyonce’s next single? Have your say in the comments below.

Miley Cyrus Kisses Katy Perry At Los Angeles ‘Bangerz’ Concert: Watch

Miley Cyrus kissed Katy Perry, just to try it. And for a second, it was a totally romantic moment.

On her Bangerz tour, Cyrus uses a kiss cam to urge concertgoers to make out during “Adore You.” On February 22 in Los Angeles, she spotted Perry watching from the front row. She motions the Prism star to get closer. They reach for other, lean in and kiss. Then Perry shrieks and bolts. As she reveals on Twitter, Cyrus had used her tongue.

Clearly, Cyrus wasn’t fazed by Perry’s reaction. “I kissed a girl and I really liked it a lot,” she said to the crowd.

Their kiss wasn’t the only surprise of the night. Later, Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips joined her on stage to perform 2002′s “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1″ — not once, but twice. (Coyne admits to messing up. Cyrus accuses him of being drunk.) This time, Cyrus was the one freaking out. “I’m so fucking scared,” she said.

Eva Simons Returns As The Featured Vocalist On Sidney Samson’s “Celebrate The Rain”: Listen

There’s no stopping the Dutch invasion of clubland! Joining Martin Garrix, Afrojack and Tiesto in the battle for EDM supremacy is countryman Sidney Samson (of “Riverside” fame), who teams up with dance diva Eva Simons on bone-rattling new single “Celebrate The Rain”.

Opening with the “Take Over Control” vocalist singing about a drought over jittery keys, the track soon explodes into a booming electro-house anthem with the kind of hands-in-the-air chorus that will be devoured by clubbers around the globe. Some of the lyrics are a bit odd (“I wanna dance in a puddle”…sure, why not?) but this still hits the spot. Listen after the jump.

Will this get your body moving? Let us know in the comments below.

Tove Lo Continues To Impress With “Not On Drugs”: Listen To The Soaring ‘Truth Serum’ Cut

Tove Lo lives up to the ever-increasing hype on brilliantly-titled new track “Not On Drugs”. The Swedish diva, who cut her teeth writing hits for Icona Pop and Girls Aloud, made huge waves in 2013 with debut single “Habits” before cementing her status as a synth-pop songstress to watch with equally great follow-up “Out Of Mind”.

The kooky wordsmith - she sang about eating in the bathtub and visiting sex clubs in “Habits” - is finally ready to unleash her debut EP Truth Serum on March 3, and it promises to be an absolute must-hear given the quality of “Not On Drugs”. The soaring dub step-infused (but in a good way), mid-tempo dance anthem boasts a killer chorus, clever lyrics and a sultry vocal. What more do you need? Listen after the jump.

‘Beyonce’ Is The 24th Best-Selling LP Of 2013 After Just Three Days, Sells 1 Millionth Digital Copy

The stats keep rolling in for Beyonce‘s blockbuster fifth LP with news that the stealth release is already the 24th highest-selling album of 2013 - after just three days. Selling 617,000 copies on iTunes between Friday and Sunday, the visual extravaganza has already outsold Kanye West‘s Yeezus (the year’s 25th best-seller with 607,000 copies sold).

In other King B news, Apple is reporting that Beyonce passed the one million mark on iTunes internationally at 11:15am PST this morning (December 18). It now holds the record as the music retailer’s fastest selling album of all time. Oh and the LP is also predicted to spend a second week at number one in the US with digital sales of 250,000+.

Have you bought Beyonce yet? Let us know in the comments.

Katy Perry Selects “Dark Horse” As The Third Single From ‘Prism’

Katy Perry will release “Dark Horse” as the third single from her blockbuster Prism LP. The Juicy J-featuring trap-pop anthem was sent to pop and rhythmic radio yesterday (December 17) after it received unsolicited radio support and months of healthy download sales on iTunes.

This is a complete no-brainer. “Dark Horse” is the catchiest song on Katy’s third album and is already top 10 on iTunes without a video clip or major promo push. It really should have been the LP’s second single instead of “Unconditionally” - a move that would have kept the diva’s string of top 10 hits intact (let’s be real, this song is going to be massive).

Ciara Says She’s Already Working On Her Sixth Album

ciara-genlux

Call ‘em, Cici. After her fifth studio album, this year’s Ciara, turned out to be the best of Ciara‘s career (and then underperformed outrageously), the R&B siren is already back in the studio cooking up her upcoming sixth LP - as she admitted in a cover story with Genlux (?) magazine.

“I'm in the process of making my new album,” she said. “My inspiration is life and reality. It's important to express myself musically. I am so connected to who I am now, and I want to share pieces of myself through my songs. It’s like having a conversation with the world.”

There’s no rhyme or reason to why Ciara wasn’t a massive album - it was packed with radio candy, the critics adored it (see how many best-of-year lists “Body Party” is making), she promoted it efficiently, and I’d even argue that the spare, sultry R&B vibe of tracks like “Sophomore” and “DUI” bears much in common with some of the best tracks on Beyonce. Yup, I said it.

Here’s hoping that her next effort brings CiCi some justice.

Britney Spears’ “Work Bitch” Gets An Upbeat Electro-House Remix: Listen

Britney Spears new single “Work Bitch” is shooting up iTunes - the only thing standing between it and the top spot is Miley Cyrus‘ seemingly impenetrable “Wrecking Ball” - but club domination seems assured with DJs falling over themselves to remix the track.

With the official mixes still a way off, the bootlegs are currently filling the void. One of the best belongs to UK knob-twiddler Matt Nevin, who memorably made Lady Gaga‘s “Aura” worth listening to. He works similar magic on Brit’s latest. Listen after the jump.

Betty Who Signs With RCA Records, Continues Quest To Save Music

betty-who-signing-contract

Good news for people who love good pop music: Betty Who, Australian glamazon extraordinaire and dance-pop songbird, whose The Movement EP cemented her as one of the brightest stars on the horizon, has signed to RCA Records, where she will record her debut album and make her contemporaries look foolish and basic for even trying. Label buzz was circulating around the chanteuse all summer, but it really ignited with last week’s release of a viral wedding proposal video set to her song “Somebody Loves You,” which accrued over 9 million views and saw her debut EP shoot up the iTunes chart.

So now she’s an official major label pop star, with greatness (and by greatness, I really just mean “radio play”) in her future. Godspeed, Miss Who. This is your moment.
